“I’m pretty sure I’ve never met anyone that’s spent 50 years in any job, so I do think it warrants a whole year of celebrations,” Mullins said. As he told the story of how he met his wife, Laura, in the late ‘60s at the Jersey Shore, Doyle looked left, then right, and leaned in. He’s still able to easily recite Korean words and phrases, and recalls with fondness the people he met there.

Sweet duplex cottage in Pasadena, the property comes complete with gazebo, old-timey toilet, and some very dark and heavy wall coverings. This house in Highland Park has been all done up but is struggling to find someone to love it--probably because it's on top of a freeway. With five bedrooms and two bathrooms and a very dollhouse-like appearance it's asking $469,000 after a couple modest price chops. This colorful house is a slightly strange mix of beautiful original features and seriously tacky upgrades.

It was nicknamed McGillin's by those who frequented the establishment, and the bar took on the title as its official name.

If you ever visit McGillin’s — and you should if you can — their exclusive McGillin’s 1860 IPA is the beer to order. Back when I was in college they had some sort of ridiculous Friday night wings special — 100 wings for $10? — that never ceased to seem too good to be true.

Henjes said Doyle is so proud of his job he hands out his business card to everyone he meets (he gave me one after I interviewed him at McGillin’s this week, in case I forgot where he worked or why I was there). Things were a lot different at McGillin’s back in Doyle’s early days. The bar only took cash, allowed smoking, and charged 45 cents for a mug of Genny Cream Ale.
